UPS – A Battle of Epic Proportions – The Back Story

I work at a Naturopathic Clinic downtown in the Sault. In this clinic, I am receptionist/assistant/hand-holder to three ladies: Terri (ND), Penny (RMT), and Heather (Physiotherapist).

On Tuesday June 14, 2011 (during the Canada Post lock-out), Penny gives me a card and a picture frame made from popsicle sticks that her kids created for their dad. We are in Ontario, and he lives in British Columbia, and she asked me to call UPS and ship the envelope sized “package” to their father before Father’s Day (June 19th). I went online to attempt scheduling a pick up from the office, but decided it was safer to call and find out the cheapest method of shipping that would arrive before June 19th (which was a Sunday). We do not have an account with UPS, and had never used it before this time, but the person receiving the package requested that we use UPS.

I called and spoke to someone whose name I did not understand. I explained to her the situation, and that I needed the package to arrive before Father’s Day on Sunday. She told me to use their “Standard” service, as this was the cheapest, and would take 2-3 days. She said the package would arrive no later than Friday June 17th, and would cost $31.69. I found this a bit pricey, but since it was going to be picked up at our location, I asked her to schedule the pickup. That afternoon, the UPS truck came, and the driver filled out a way bill for me. I gave him a cheque from Penny for $31.69.

The rest of the week passes without incident. The office is closed on the weekends.

The weeks to follow are many, long, and arduous.
